The Ford Fiesta – Not in America!
The new Ford Fiesta seems like the perfect car for the environmentally friendly movement. It’s a sporty compact with the seating capability of five and gets about 65mpg. It seems like a very capable car with no downside, except we cannot buy it.
Even though the Fiesta could compete with other fuel efficient cars, Ford is only selling them in Europe. The only reason the President of Ford gave for not selling this car in America is tha it would be too pricey to import.
The main reason for the selective selling is that the Fiesta runs on diesel fuel and the US remains to detest the fuel. The American public still views the diesel car as an overpolluting pile of junk.
Diesel cars let out much less toxic particles than a regular gas powered car while getting up to 30% better gas mileage. Ford has a car that gets over 60 miles per gallon, yet they won’t bring it to the US? It is Ford’s belief that North America will not buy a diesel car. For some reason Ford thinks that the Fiesta would not be very viable here state-side even though it does well when compared to European diesels.
Ford believes that the could not make any money on selling the Fiesta, and the fact that the Fiesta is made in Britian does not help.With great seculation the main arguement is; will American’s view of Diesel ever change enough for automakers to make a profit? All Ford needs to do it look towards Volkswagen and their TDi Jetta. The Jetta costs about what the Fiesta would cost, gets only 41 MPG on the highway as compared to the Fiesta’s 65 MPG, and finally the Jetta has received numerous accolades for being an ultra green car. Ford is missing out on all this publicity the Jetta is enjoying.
